Hole making application considerations and tooling

Hole making using indexable tooling eliminates the need for special, larger-diameter drills. High-feed and button inserts are most effective at quickly roughing the hole, but will leave a more scalloped wall finish. Shoulder mills are slower, but will leave a smoother wall. Indexable milling tools are a great solution for:

  • Both smaller- and larger-diameter holes
  • Blind and through holes
  • Circular (2D) and helical (3D) interpolation
  • Low-horsepower, high-output method (helixing)

Recommended Tooling for Hole Making:

RHINO-FEED high-feed milling series

RHINO-FEED™ High-Feed Milling Series

  • Ultra-fast feed rates at light depth of cut
  • Productive for light-duty / lower HP machines
  • Long tool life
  • Axial tool pressure - very stable, even in long-reach applications
  • Z-level rough or helix (constant ramp)
  • Will leave rougher wall finish
  • Will leave corner radius and angle at floor-wall intersection
  • Suitable for all materials except nonferrous
EDGE² DTB double-sided button cutters

EDGE² DTB Double-Sided Toroid Button Cutters

  • Moderate feed rates and ramp angles due to double-sided insert
  • Strongest insert geometry
  • Great edge economy with 12 usable indexes
  • Suitable for all materials except nonferrous
  • Will leave scalloped wall finish
  • Will leave larger insert radius in floor-wall intersection
  • Single insert size (12mm)
Single-sided Toroid face mills

Single-Sided Toroid Button Cutters

  • Extra clearance for more aggressive feed rates and ramp angles
  • Strongest insert geometry (round inserts)
  • Cutting edges and grades for all materials, including nonferrous
  • Good edge economy with 8 usable indexes
  • Will leave scalloped wall finish
  • Will leave larger insert radius in floor-wall intersection
  • 4 insert sizes (3/8”, 1/2”, 5/8”, 3/4")
APET/XPET single-sided square shoulder

APET/XPET Single-Sided 90° Square Shoulder Mills

  • Slower feed rate with potentially heavier depth of cut
  • Good ramping capability
  • Leaves best wall finish due to square shoulder cutting edge
  • Geometries and grades for all materials, including nonferrous
  • Will leave corner radius of insert in floor-wall intersection
  • 3 insert sizes (10mm, 12mm, 16mm)
