Recommendations

45-degree face milling insert types – short wiper and corner radius
  • The short wiper inserts can generate greater tool pressure than the corner radius inserts. Use the radius inserts to maintain greater visual consistency. Use the wiper inserts for a smoother measurable overall finish.
  • Ideal face milling engagement (width of cut / Ae) is generally 60%. Reduce to 30-40% for harder materials like heat treated steel. When taking full diameter cuts, reduce depth of cut (Ap) to help reduce tool pressure.
  • Use coarse-pitch versions when taking a full-diameter cut or when long-reach tool holders are required, or when machining on lighter-duty machine tools (CAT40, HSK63).
  • Maximum recommended tool diameter for lighter-duty machine tools is 2.0” unless very light cutting is being performed. Wiper inserts are not recommended when machining on lighter duty machines with cutters larger than 2.0”

Technical Considerations

  • Load inserts with the same cutting edge to minimize runout. See the insert face for ID marks.
  • Thoroughly clean pockets and inserts at each indexing operation to increase cutter accuracy and achieve maximum tool life.
  • Thoroughly clean the pocket walls and insert sides with each index to assure even wear and good surface finish.
  • Insert screw is a Torx Plus size 20IP / TP-20 (wrench not included).
