3D profile roughing application considerations and tooling

High-feed tooling is typically your most efficient solution for 3D roughing. Button cutters are a close second in terms of metal removal rate, and they are very economical to run. Square shoulder tooling is also an option, especially with a larger corner radius in play, but it is not a routine choice. Common 3D profiling operations include:

  • Mold and die applications
  • Sloped, curved, and angled surfaces
  • Tapered walls
  • Deep, straight walls

Recommended Tooling for 3D Roughing:

RHINO-FEED high-feed milling series

RHINO-FEED™ High-Feed Milling Series

  • Ultra-fast feed rates at light depth of cut
  • Productive for light-duty / lower HP machines
  • Long tool life
  • Axial tool pressure - very stable, even in long-reach applications
  • Z-level rough or constant ramp profile
  • Will leave rougher wall finish
  • Will leave corner radius and angle at floor-wall intersection
  • Suitable for all materials except nonferrous
EDGE² DTB double-sided button cutters

EDGE² DTB Double-Sided Toroid Button Cutters

  • Aggressive material removal using round inserts
  • Strongest insert geometry
  • Great edge economy with 12 usable indexes
  • Suitable for all materials except nonferrous
  • Will leave scalloped wall finish
  • Will leave larger insert radius in floor-wall intersection
  • Single insert size (12mm)
Single-sided Toroid face mills

Single-Sided Toroid Button Cutters

  • Aggressive material removal using round inserts
  • Strongest insert geometry
  • Cutting edges and grades for all materials, including nonferrous
  • Good edge economy with 8 usable indexes
  • Will leave scalloped wall finish
  • Will leave larger insert radius in floor-wall intersection
  • 4 insert sizes (3/8”, 1/2”, 5/8”, 3/4")
APET/XPET single-sided square shoulder

APET/XPET Single-Sided 90° Square Shoulder Mills

  • Aggressive cutting with the strongest inserts and enhanced clearance
  • Excellent ramping capability
  • Geometries and grades for all materials, including nonferrous
  • Will leave corner radius of insert in floor-wall intersection
  • Will leave a stair-step finish on sloped/curved surfaces
  • 3 insert sizes (10mm, 12mm, 16mm)
Single-Sided Ball Nose Finishing Tools

Single-Sided Ball Nose End Mills

  • Use RDBN (rough-duty ball nose) inserts for light roughing and semi-finishing ball nose applications
  • Use HFBD high-feed inserts for detail roughing applications
  • Both inserts fit standard single-sided Dapra ball nose end mills and are suitable for roughing applications in diameters from .500" to 1.000"
